We understand that fear of flying is a real and distressing issue for some patients. However, we do not prescribe benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam, lorazepam, temazepam, clonazepam) for flying-related anxiety or sleep during flights. This decision is based on current medical guidance and safety considerations:
· Safety in Emergencies:
These medications slow down your reaction times and awareness. In the rare event of an emergency on board, this could put you and others at risk, especially if you’re unable to follow instructions or require help.
· Increased Risk of Blood Clots (DVT):
Benzodiazepines can cause very deep sleep, meaning you move less during long flights. This increases your risk of developing a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially serious condition.
· Side Effects & Dependence:
These drugs can cause drowsiness, confusion, poor coordination, memory issues, and even addiction. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe. They are also controlled drugs in the UK due to their potential for misuse.
· Not Recommended for Fear of Flying:
National guidelines advise against using benzodiazepines for mild anxiety or phobias, including fear of flying. They are only considered in short-term crises—not for predictable events like air travel.
· Possible Agitation or Aggression:
Some people experience paradoxical effects such as agitation, aggression, or disinhibition, which can be very disruptive in the confined space of an aircraft—and can lead to serious legal consequences.
· Legal Restrictions Abroad:
Some countries have strict regulations around benzodiazepines. Travelling with these medications could lead to confiscation, fines, or even arrest.
Instead of medication, we recommend more effective and safer long-term strategies:
